Waterford United 3; Limerick 0
Waterford United will head to Monaghan this weekend in a confident frame of mind following this excellent victory over Munster rivals Limerick at the RSC on Friday last.
In truth the result was never in any doubt because Stephen Henderson’s side always held the upper hand, and although the visitors did apply a little pressure during the middle of the second half, the Blues were by far the superior team on the night.
Three weeks ago Waterford scored in the second minute against Salthill Devon. One week later they scored in the second minute against Mervue United. In this match they took twice as long to score – yes 4 minutes and from then on they more or less bossed matters.
When Alan Carey missed a penalty on 21 minutes, the home team were leading two-nil so it could have been a case of game over as early as that. The three points gained from this outing means that the gap between Waterford and Monaghan is now down to just one point, and what a game it promises to be in Gortakeegan this Friday.
Mons have a game in hand due to their League Cup final match against Sligo Rovers, which they lost, so another victory will be the aim of Waterford. Derry City have a four-point cushion from Waterford at the top but they have to play Monaghan also, so it’s still all to play for as regards the league title.
