If the Waterford senior hurlers do get to play a Munster Final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh next month they’ll be hoping to fare better than the county’s U21s, who were given a right trimming by Cork in an utterly one-sided provincial quarter-final on Leeside on Wednesday evening.

Watched by Davy Fitzgerald, the Déise lads only scored one point in an awful first half in which the homesters shot 12 wides.

Cork were six points up at the break, and after each side was reduced to 14 players when Waterford’s Owen Whelan and Cian McCarthy were shown straight reds for an off-the-ball incident shortly after the re-start, the Rebels kicked on to run out 1-16 to 1-3 winners – the visitors’ goal from Brian O’Sullivan coming in stoppage time.

Hopefully this weekend will prove more uplifting from a Waterford viewpoint.
