Business has been brisk since Friday last when Ken McGrath reluctantly put the ‘closing down sale’ signs in the front windows of his sports shop on George’s Street.
After four years in business the former Waterford senior hurling star has decided to call time on his business, having done all he could to keep it afloat.
“We’ve had tremendous support from everyone in Waterford since we opened up in Ballybricken four years ago and again when we moved down here to Georges Street,” said Ken, who expects to close the shop within a fortnight.
“I can’t stress enough how important that support has been and I really want to thank everyone for their custom over the last few years.”
Despite taking a serious and disappointing decision, Ken was as genial and as helpful as ever to the large numbers of shoppers visiting the premises to pick up some sports gear at a bargain price.
“This recession has really had a devastating effect on some businesses in Waterford and I think it’s getting worse,” Ken fears.
“Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be the last business to close down. It’s been impossible to compete with the big multi-nationals and in the last few years three of them have opened up in the area, making it really tough. While it’s a very difficult decision, it’s one I had to make.”
