It’s most welcome to report on some good business news when it comes to commercial activity on the Quay.

As part of an €11 million investment in Days Hotel (previously titled the Bridge Hotel), a new spa and leisure centre has just opened, with initial feedback proving most favourable.

The hotel, which now incorporates the ‘Spirit Health & Beauty’ spa along with a 20-metre swimming pool and leisure centre, has breathed new life into the Merchants Quay area.

Some 32 additional bedrooms and new suites have also been added to the premises, creating 20 new full-time jobs in the process.

The building project, first mooted by the hotel’s proprietors in 2004, was delivered by David Flynn Building Contractors, regenerating building fronts on both O’Connell Street and the Quay in the process.

“We’re delighted with the end result,” said hotel proprietor Jim Treacy. “It’s a great development and one we’re confident will enhance the profile of the hotel and generate new business for us.”

An opening in the local market prompted Jim Treacy into this substantial business investment.

“Well, you had the Ard Rí closing across the road from us, and when we weighed up our location in relation to [the Ard Rí] and given the catchment area we’re operating in, there was an opportunity there for us to do something, which has led us to this point,” he explained.

“I think there’s very little doubt that the work we’ve undertaken should significantly raise the profile of the hotel. We now stand alone in the local market as the only hotel with both luxury spa and leisure centre facilities, and we’re already receiving positive feedback.”

While hotel guests can avail of the facilities, which also includes a fully-equipped gym and a range of holistic treatments, clients can also avail of the new facilities by taking out an annual membership subscription.

“The initial reaction has been great, I’m glad to say” added Jim. “We’ve already had several guests complimenting us on both the new spa and the leisure centre, which is tremendously encouraging.”

Those contemplating gym membership will be glad to know that parking at the nearby Glen multi-storey carpark (adjoined to Aldi) comes free of charge as part of the membership package.

Meanwhile, salon clients will effectively receive the same deal via a €4 voucher off their next treatment, given the €4 daily flat fee charged for parking at the Glen.

“We’re offering something new, something that’s top of the range and something that we feel confident will prove very popular with guests and members alike,” said Jim Treacy.

Such considerable investment in a central Waterford location must be, and can only be, heartily welcomed.
