The public are being reminded that a 50k and 30k cycle taking place this coming Easter Sunday, 20 April, is to raise awareness around mental health and suicide.

The event, organised by Cllr. Liam Brazil, is now over ten years old and starts and finishes in Lemybrien, taking in other small villages along the Copper Coast route in the Comeragh District.

“This is all about creating awareness of mental health and trying to remove the stigma around talking about mental health and suicide,” Cllr. Brazil told the April meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr. Brazil said the event has gone from strength-to-strength over the last ten years, raising in excess of €200,000 for the mental health charity, Suicide or Survive.

“That money comes back into Waterford through workshops on mental health,” Cllr. Brazil pointed out.

His council colleague, Cllr. Seanie Power, praised him for all the work he does in organising the charity Easter cycle.

“It is a hugely important thing for mental health and I compliment Cllr. Brazil on all the great work he does over the last number of years in organising that cycle to raise awareness around mental health and suicide,” Cllr. Power said to applause from everyone in the Council Chamber.

The Easter Cycle starts at 9.00 a.m. (8.00 a.m. registration). Entry fee is €25 (donations welcome).
