Jim Furyk may not have won the BMW Championship in Chicago last weekend but he did write himself into the history books when he shot a second round of 12 under par, 59 at Conway Farms.
Furyk joins a small and select group of only five golfers, Al Geiberger (1977), Chip Beck (1991), David Duval (1999), Paul Goydos (2010) and Stuart Appleby (2010) who had previously managed to shoot the magical tally on the PGA Tour.
Furyk’s round included 11 birdies and an eagle at the par four 15th with just one bogey at the par four fifth.
Rounds of 69 and a disappointing level par round of 71 followed on a rain delayed Monday conclusion as Furyk finished three shots behind Zach Johnson who picked up the winner’s cheque for $1.4 million, and moved to number four in the FedEx Cup race with just the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta remaining where that lucrative $10million bonus is on offer to the overall winner.
While Friday’s on-course headlines centred on Furyk’s magnificent 59 Tiger Woods left the course fuming after he was hit with a two shot penalty.
