Journalism has always been a precarious business for various reasons but, lately, the job of reporting the news has become downright dangerous. In this country we are regularly threatened and often verbally abused just for going about our lawful, day-to-day work and there is always the chance the government might come after us for printing the truth. Don’t ever forget that reporter Susan O’Keeffe was the only person who faced prosecution as a result of the infamous and extremely costly Beef Tribunal! Also in this country we have the recent Blasphemy Law which should never have been enacted because, sooner or later, it will cause no end of trouble and embarrassment by being used by somebody for selfish and bigoted purposes.
