09KieranColumn1SOME weeks ago, I compiled a news story about the temporary closure of the William Vincent Wallace Plaza opposite Reginald’s Tower on The Quay. Due to health and safety concerns, the area in front of the bandstand was closed until a suitable non-slip surface could be sourced for the area’s timber decking.
However, there is another major issue in this location which requires urgent attention. On a recent walk near the plaza, I was shocked to notice the amount of rubbish dispersed throughout the location and particularly around the bandstand. A huge number of empty beer bottles were discarded by the bandstand as well as general rubbish including much takeaway packaging, with all of this clearly on view to the passing traffic.
The area has also become a popular location for public drinking and, as was outlined at a recent Waterford City Council meeting, a place for acts of mindless vandalism.
