On Saturday last in Nenagh two very good young athletes from Ferrybank AC competed in the All-Ireland Juvenile Indoor Combined Events Championships and they came home with a gold and silver medal.

Megan Kiely (pictured) won the under-18 title with a total of 3126 points from the five events. Her times for her races were: 60m Hurdles – 9.7 seconds, and 800 metres – 2min 31.3 seconds, while her distances in the three field events were Long Jump – 5.11 metres, High Jump – 1.62 m and Shot Putt – 7.67 m.

Ciara Giles Doran took the silver medal in the under-16 section with a score of 3082 pts and was only beaten by 10 points. Her individual results were: 60m hurdles – 9.7 seconds, 800m – 2 min 38.2 seconds, Long Jump – 5.43 metres, High Jump – 1.53m, and Shot Putt – 8.63 m.

Russell wins in London

On Saturday last at the London Indoor Games in Lee Valley Stadium, London, Christopher Russell, Ferrybank AC, had a good run in winning the 200 metres in a time of 20.06 seconds, not far outside his best time for the distance.

Bralitis takes 10 miles

Sandis Bralitis, West Waterford AC, was the easy winner of the Quantum life 10 miles road race in Dungarvan last Sunday in a time of 50 minutes and 57 seconds.

His clubmate Ravis Zakis was second in 53.07 and Colin Merritt, Carrignavar, was third in 53.09. Siobhan O’Doherty, Borrisokane was the first lady home in 58.49. Rhona Lynch, Eagle, was second in 62.04 and Angela McCann, Clonmel, was third in 62.35.

First man over-40 was Ted Flannelly, United Striders, Co Wexford; o45 Cathaill O’Connell, St Finbarr’s; o50 Stephen Griffin Tralee Hrs; o55 Joe Ahearne, Bilboa, Limerick; o60 Mce Tobin Grange/Fermoy; o65 Tony Dunne, Carrignavar.

The Junior section was won by Michael Dowling, West Wicklow, and the Team prize went to Leevale. The first Women o35 was Corina Walsh, West Waterford, and her clubmate Diane Behan won the 040 category; o45 Mary Sweeney, St Finbarr’s; o50 Theresa Tuohy Bilboa, o55 Alice Walsh; o60 Margaret Dunne, Carrignavar.

The Junior race was won by Tara Roche of the female Team winners West Waterford.

Joe’s first

In Raheny on Sunday also, West Waterford’s Joe Gough won the o55 section of the 5 miles road race.

East Munster Schools Cross-Country Championships

On Friday last at the East Munster Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Abbeyside athletes from Waterford schools were in top form with four winning their races – namely, Shane Quinn in the senior grade, Hugh Morgan at Intermediate level (both from De La Salle College), Kate Veale the Intermediate and Shamie Fennell, Minor (both St Augustine’s).

Second placings went to Siobhan Heylin, Mercy, Senior; Conor Rochford, Senior and Bronagh Kearns, Intermediate (both Abbey CC), Ciaran O’Neill, Minor and Robbie Mulligan, Junior (both St Augustine’s).

Third placings went to Aisling Quinn Ursuline, Minor; Richard Stillwell, St John’s, Dungarvan, Intermediate, and Declan Power, CBS Dungarvan, Senior.

In team competitions St Augustine’s won the boys Minor, Junior and Senior, and were second in the Intermediate girls. Ursuline were second in the Minor girls and third in the Junior girls, and De La Salle were second in the intermediate boys.
