Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins in 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies', which plays at the re-opened Waterford Omniplex this Friday.

The Omniplex cinema will re-open on Patrick Street this Friday night for the first screening of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the latest and final installment in director Peter Jackson’s journey through the imagination of JRR Tolkien.
The landmark city centre premises, which closed in September 2008, has undergone a €2 million renovation programme in recent weeks and its opening, according to Omniplex group director Mark Anderson, will result in the creation of 17 jobs in Waterford.
“These include management, cinema staff and cleaning staff and we would be hopeful that, all going well, we will expand on these numbers over time,” he said.
“It’s great to be reopening in Waterford. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for quite some time and a significant reduction in commercial property rates, as well as improved confidence in the local economy, have made it a reality.”
He added: “From this weekend, we’ll have five screens in operation showing all the latest blockbusters, including ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I’, ‘Paddington’, ‘The Penguins of Madagascar’, ‘The Imitation Game’ and lots more.”
Said Mr Anderson: “One of these will be the ‘OmniplexMAXX’ giant screen, which we’re delighted to be bringing to Waterford. This will be state-of-the-art, with luxury leather recliner seats and Waterford is only the fourth Omniplex in the country to get such a screen.”
