There was a huge number of Gardai in City Hall, Waterford, on Wednesday last to welcome Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy. The top Garda chief was fulfilling a long term engagement with Mayor John Halligan whom he met at Aras an Uachtarain at a function.
The occasion was to highlight the important role played by Community Gardai.
Waterford city has a very strong presence of community Gardai who have a very strong relationship with the community. Representatives of the city communities such as the Sacred Heart, Cork Road/Kingsmeadow, Ballybeg and Kilcohan/St Herblain were present.
Commissioner Murphy said it was well known that all politics was local but so was policing. Local Gardai work with local communities and their leaders was very important. Waterford had a good record and was not a city of high crime and it had respect for the law. He laid emphasis on the words ‘commitment, trust and confidence’ and understood that communities needed to see law enforced.
Exchange of information was very important as well as viewpoints. Problem solving was a key role for the Gardai and the force needed to be visible in Waterford. The community and the Gardai needed to play together as a team.
