Lorcan Hurley (Tramore Boxing Club) at Dublin Airport on his return from the European Junior Championships in the Ukraine where he won a bronze medal.

THERE were great scenes of joy in
Dublin airport on Sunday, May 24th
as Tramore ace
Lorcan Hurley returned home from
the junior European championships
with not only a bronze medal, but also
the award for best technical boxer of
the championships.
The Tramore ace, a multi Irish
champion was on the receiving end
of a highly controversial “defeat” to
Javid Huseynov in Friday’s semifi
nal. The talented Azeri light-fly was
awarded a split decision. However
Hurley, who had clearly won the fight
having dominated all three rounds,
received a standing ovation leaving
the ring from Irish and neutral fans.
It was also a busy month for other
members of Tramore Boxing Club.
Ruby Moran claimed her first
Irish title by beating Bronagh ONeill
(Sliabh Lucra) on a technical knockout.
Zarah Breslin was beaten on a
very close split decision in her Irish
semi-final by Jessica Clarke from
Carndonagh. Both Ruby and Zara had
previously won county and munster
titles.
In the under 18 national championships,
Tramore Boxing club, were
represented by Ivan Khlopchick and
Ryan Hurley. Ivan Klopchick (64kg)
was beaten in his quarter fi nal by
James Cleary from Galway on a unanimous
decision. Ryan Hurley (60kg)
has advanced into the quarter finals
having defeated both Ben Teeling
from Dublin and Oran Keddle St
Bronaghs on split decisions. Ryan will
now meet Eugene McKeever from St
Malachys in the national stadium.
The summer months will be a busy
time for Tramore boxing Club with
the upcoming national Junior Cadets
(June) and Senior National Cadets
(July). Hopefully some good results
will follow.
