Well known for his objections to many developments throughout the city, Brendan McCann has appealed against Waterford City Council’s green lighting a new private member’s club on John’s Lane.
Both Mr McCann and Workers Party Councillor Davy Walsh have lodged objections to the proposal made by Blazin’ Aces Partnership who wish to convert two retail units into a gaming club.
Waterford City Council granted planning permission to Blazin’ Aces on June 3rd with seven separate conditions attached.
The case is due to be ruled upon by An Bord Pleanála on October 20th.
Meanwhile, An Bord Pleanála has ruled that the erection of two static billboards following the expiry of a permission to erect a prismatic billboard at 16 Lombard Street is exempt development.
A 40-house development at Feddaun, Mount Melleray, which also included eight serviced sites, a borehole and associated works, was refused permission by An Bord.
In its ruling, An Bord adjudged the Creo Developments proposal to be “contrary to the planning and sustainable development of the area”.
How can anybody take this fella seriously?
On the other hand, it is worth noting that perhaps its good to have somebody keep an eye on the council. If the planning department are giving the go ahead to developments and An Bord Pleanala are then over ruling them – perhaps a man in the middle ensuring the council dont mess up is a good thing?
Do we really need over sized developments throughout our city simply because we feel that jobs need to be created and our city is underdeveloped? Instead we should be looking at getting the right type of development rather than any development at all so that we can ensure a better developed city which is not noted for over development and strange looking new developments towering over our city.
Its a tough one – one side of the coin suggests the constant objecting and complaining is harming our city and turning away developers while the other side suggests someone who cares that bit to much for our city and while trying to protect it from over development and keeping an eye on the council slipping up is being far to protective. An Board Plenala have both agreed and disagreed with his objections in the past.
So Kevin do you think that someone who cares that bit too much about our city has the right to enforce his will while the dole queues are growing? Development needs to be encouraged and employment created. These are desperate times for the deise. This particular development was not exactly going to change the face of Waterford. If Mr McCann really cared as much as he says then he might think more about the people that are experiencing hard times than his own political agenda.
