A Waterford city councillor said this week that planning officials in City Hall were considering a proposal that, if granted, had the potential to hurtle the Quay and city centre back into the bad old days of industrial grime when litter, dust and smells blew across the river from the North Wharf.
I notice you editorially classify this story as ‘Local News, Secondary Story’.
Those seeking planning permission to site such a possibly odious (in many ways0 industry must be delighted with such a categorisation.
Previous City Councils seem to have always been united when it came to working towards beautifying our city. The results of their efforts abound; the tree-lined walkway that stretches from one end of The Quay to the other is a joy.
If this planning request succeeds we will know that the Irish version of Tammany Hall is alive and lives amongst us today.
I don’t think this is exactly the type of action which President Obama had in mind when he roared out over College Green, ‘Is féidir linn!’

Im so happy to be in Australia and away from that dump of a “city”
Great, let’s look up at the Ardree Hotel ruins and breathe in the fumes from that wharf!
Absolute disgrace if this goes ahead. The City Council should be ashamed of themselves for even considering this.
another great idea for waterford
