Among them is the well-known Martha Powers pub on Queen Street, which had been closed for the past 18 months and is believed to have been bought by a local businessman.
Mrs Power was a local legend who worked into her 90s and had built up a loyal trade over the years, and always had a busy counter during Race Weeks and Christmas time, where punters enjoyed her unique conversation.
The St Leger on Main Street has also been sold, Barry confirmed, and has been acquired by Avery and Niamh Coryell, proprietors of the Beach Haven Guest House.
Barry Herterich also confirmed that the Coryells have agreed to purchase the former Hartley’s Restaurant on Queen Street.
Further welcome news came in the sale of Freddie’s Arcade and the Atlantic Palace Arcade to a businessman in Donegal who is also in the arcade business. The properties were sold in one lot and the sale price exceeded pre-sale expectations’ for a business which had also been in receivership. The arcades are expected to re-open next year.
While discussions about the Grand Hotel’s potential sale are ongoing, we understand negotiations are ongoing.
As we went to press, we learned that the Pine Rooms restaurant, with a guide price of €165,000, has also been sold to local business people planning to re-open it as an eatery.
