06SkullThe retrieval of a human skull on the South Wexford coastline, containing six to seven teeth, has been confirmed just days after Justice Minister Alan Shatter ordered an audit of all coroners’ offices in the State.
The Ministerial request has been welcomed by the Committee For The Forgotten, a Waterford-based group which is pressing for the scientific identification of all human remains within the State’s possession.
The skull was found on Ballyteigue Beach, near Fethard-on-Sea in the Christmas/New Year period, prompting speculation that it may be all that remains of one of the many Wexford and Waterford fishermen lost to the sea in recent years.
“We’d hope that this skull can be positively identified so that a sad chapter in one family’s recent history can be brought to a close,” said Committee For The Forgotten Chairperson Jim Griffin.
