The Youth Motorcycling Sporting Association (YMSA) autumn championship kicks off on Sunday next, September 13th at 12 noon at Ballyboy, Kilmacthomas.
The event will be the first round of a five round championship which will run over the coming months and is organised by the South Western MX group which is a motocross and off road club based in Cork.
A number of local riders will be participating and it’s hoped that staging the event in the locality will further increase the popularity of grasstrack racing in Waterford.
Maurice Kiely (13) from Fenor will be among the competitors taking part on Sunday.
He has had a love of bikes since a very early age and has been racing for two years on a Honda 150cc.
He began racing with his friend Ben O’Brien from Tramore, who races on a Honda 85 cc.
Maurice finished second in the Leinster Offroad Championships last year and came third in the Southern Centre Championships.
He has also competed in various different events around the region and hopes to progress to the 300 cc short circuit next year.
Both Maurice and Ben are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to participate in this weekend’s event.
Maurice is carrying on a family tradition as his father Maurice is a well-known former road racer who participated in many events during the 1980s and 1990s.
Everyone is encouraged to come along to the grasstrack racing event in Kilmacthomas this weekend and enjoy a great family day out.
Those travelling to the event should take the turn off for Mahon Bridge on the N25 and follow the signposts.
If anyone wants to enter, they can register on the day or visit the South Western MX Facebook page for more information.
Admission for spectators is €5, with children free.
