There was mixed fortunes for two former champions of the FAI Junior Cup over the weekend. Carrick United defeated St Joseph’s 2-1 in what was one of their toughest games in this competition for many a long day.
Thomas Fitzgerald put the champions of 2007 in front midway through the first half. The same player scored once again, this time from the penalty spot, midway through the second period but then the Saints fought back and Paul Burke scored a wonder goal 15 minutes from full time.
Burke almost took the game to extra time four minutes from the end but Carrick goalkeeper Adrian Walsh produced a superb save to spare Carrick’s blushes.
Bohemians were beaten 3-1 at home by a Dungarvan United team who have not lost a game since the opening day of the season. The Division 1A leaders took the lead in Ben Wadding Park through Shane Kelly, and Trevor Crotty made it 2-0 before the half-time break.
Shane Nolan pulled a goal back for the 1996 FAI Cup champions but a second goal from Shane Kelly wrapped up the game for The Old Borough outfit. Villa had no problem beating Park Rangers. Five-nil was the final score.
The Villa goalscorers were Danny Walsh, who led the charge with a hat-trick, Ian Cantwell and Stephen Murphy.
