Ferrybank 1 Southend United 2
This game which was played at The Village Grounds in Abbeylands was a classic and a fine advertisement for the game in Waterford.
Both teams had a wonderful start to the league campaign and they displayed why they are very much in the hunt to be crowned champions come the end of the season.
The game got off to a blistering start when Ferrybank scored after only three minutes.
William Halpin picked out Fiacra Knox with a precise pass and the latter hammered the ball past the Southend United goalkeeper Jack Byrne with his left foot from just inside the penalty area.
The visitors fought back with great heart and they almost got back on level terms on seven minutes when Jake O’Connor and Evan Hayes combined to set up Kyle Cooke but he was tackled brilliantly by James O’Meara just as he was about to shoot at goal from a good position.
The away side continued to press forward in search of the equaliser and Nils Ulakaka had an effort blocked by John Collins after 18 minutes.
