What’s seldom is wonderful, so the saying goes. And how strongly those words resonate with anyone that’s followed Waterford hurling since the Gaelic Athletics Association’s foundation all of 130 years ago.
On Sunday afternoon, one of those seldom, wonderful events unfurled before many a moistened Deise eye in Croke Park when Waterford’s minor hurlers, captained by Dungarvan’s Kevin Daly, claimed their first All-Ireland title in 65 years.
After an epic eight-match campaign, which saw them hurl all of their Munster opponents (Limerick twice), along with Antrim, Kilkenny and Galway, Daly proudly hoisted the Irish Press Cup after a 1-21 to 0-16 win over the Tribesmen at GAA HQ.
Spearheaded by the magnificent Austin Gleeson of Mount Sion, and Dungarvan’s Patrick Curran, whose 1-7 steered the white and blue towards a third minor title, no-one begrudged Waterford this long-awaited success.
