A Beginner’s Guide to Waterford
By Michelle Clancy

Entertainment
World famous for its singers, Waterford is the birthplace of William Vincent Wallace (The Maritana), Val Doonican and Gilbert O’Sullivan. This entertainment tradition is upheld in the city today, from organised events and gigs to impromptu music sessions in the city’s pubs.

The Waterford Show, held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is an evening of Irish music, story, song and dance in the historical setting of Waterford’s City Hall. Wearing period costume, the cast tells the story of Waterford, its heritage, culture and even its sense of humour.

In recent years, Waterford has become a veritable melee of summer festivals. Waterford Spraoi turns the city into one gigantic street party over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Spraoi originated in 1993 as a one-day event and has now become a three-day mix of international music, street theatre and performance. The parade on the Sunday night, the company’s own production, is now regarded as the highlight of the festival, involving over 400 brilliantly costumed performers, giant props and floats, pyros, lights and special effects. The 1999 parade was watched by an estimated audience of 50,000.

Other events to watch out for during the summer months include Trafest, a three-day music festival in Tramore in July and the annual Tramore Races in August.

Meanwhile Waterford International Festival of Light Opera, held at the Theatre Royal in September, attracts virtuosos from Ireland and abroad, as well as a regular audience of opera lovers.

Pubs And Restaurants In Tramore

Below you shall find some details about the various establishments on offer catering to all needs, budget’s and taste’s, enjoy the sunshine and the craic…

Joe O’Sheas

O’ Sheas boasts numerous bars, a restaurant, large dining/function hall, a late bar, smoking area/beer garden, pool table, and a games room. From the largest Irish bands (Boyzone played there in the early 90’s!), to intimate sessions in the bar, and with food availbale all day in the bar, O’ Sheas has quite a bit on offer. And of course you could venture the 10, yes TEN yards to the beach. Strand Street, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-381246 Fax: 051- 390144 Visit O’Sheas website

The Vic

The Vic has evolved through many stages, from small, smoky, side-street pub, to live music venue, popular with rugby fans. The four bars, large beergarden and great view of the bay ensure that it has something for most people. Can get busy at weekends, and is just right for a midweek pint. 11, Queen Street, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-390338 Visit The Vic website

Murphs

A real pub in the heart of the town. An eclectic line-up of live music every week, of the generally loud variety. With a roof beergarden and smoking area, Murph’s is situated at the bottom of the town, near the beach, and has an unnerving ability to make you feel you are in a real pub the moment you walk in. Strand Street, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-386440

O’Neills

Sporting bar, situated near the church. Has all the bells and whistles, pool tables, covered beergarden/smoking area, food available in newly extended Moll’s next door, and live music regularly. You might even catch people coming from various events at the nearby church, so don’t be surprised if you see suits and workclothes side by side. O’ Neills, Summerhill, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-381808

Martha’s

Absolutely unique, from an era when pubs were pubs and people were civil. Opens sometime in the evening, whenever Martha decides, and offers, nay demands, great interactive chat. Has everything you would expect from a pub that has not been developed rather allowed to evolve to what it has become, a perfect example of a place to go to find out what is happening, feeling free to air your views, with the proviso that you will be held accountable for them. Go and find out for yourself, but not too many at the same time please. Queen Street, Tramore, Co. Waterford Telephone: 051-381671

St. Ledger

The Saint Ledger used to look like someones front room, but has been extended and modernised. With music every few days, a beergarden, covered smoking area, pool table and dart board, strolling in half way down the town is always an option. The Saint Ledger, Main Street, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-386513

Alfie Hale’s

One from Alfie’s stable and similar to others in format. All sports on big TV’s, pool table and dart board also there, and live music at weekends. There is also a traditional music session on Tuesdays. Just that far up the town to avoid too many tourists, unless you are one in disguise that is. Alfie Hale’s, Main Street, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-386818

The Ritz

The thatched roof, and Dick behind the bar. This pub is situated on the coast road heading for Fenor, and has a catchment area of a few thousand with the large number of new houses located in that part of the town, so there appears to be more and more people using it as their local. Grand for a few quiet pints and a chat, big beergarden, off-licence next door, and pool table with open fire beside. Newtown, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-381291

Rockett’s of the Metalman

Rocketts is no longer owned by the Rockett family, but still thankfully serves plenty of good food, of the traditional variety. A bit out of town on the coast road, lovely setting sun out front where there are some tables, great for refreshment on the way home from some of the local beautiful beaches at Garrarrus and Kilfarrassy. Westown, Tramore, Co. Waterford Telephone: 051-381496

The Esquire

The Esquire has been serving good food for a number of years. Situated in the town’s center, its claim of being the worlds most famous restaurant is perhaps slightly exaggerated, but hey, it does serve decent food, at a decent price, with more than enough bric-a-brac to keep the most inquisitive appeased for a while. Cross Market Street, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051- 381324

The Waterfront

The Waterfront is about 100 yards from the shoreline, with a beeergarden looking out over the entire bay. There is live music in Summer, and the hotel caters for families. The Sands

The Sands is part of a large complex uncluding an amusement arcade, hotel, restaurant, late bar, and function room. No more than 100 yards from the shore, and in the heart of downtown, in the summer this can be very busy. Strand Road, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-381355 Visit the Sands website

The Majestic

The Majestic has been a flagship Tramore hotel for a number of years, which sits on the main road coming into Tramore. Popular as a venue for weddings and with touring groups. The Majestic Hotel, Lower Branch Road, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-381761, Fax: 051-381766 Vist the Majestic website

Sadie Robinson’s

Sadie’s has a well earned reputation as one of the finer pubs in the town, offering live music, cards, sports on the TV and pundits at the bar, a front lounge and smaller back bar with smoking area out the back, very popular with locals and those tourists that find it, a hint-straight up the hill. Summerhill, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Telephone: 051-381326

Croke’s

With Micheal perhaps snoozing in the chair, you will be safe in the knowledge that Osama Bin Laden is looking over you from an old FBI wanted poster hanging over the piano, which is on the wall near the door out to the back yard which you pass through on the way out to the toilet. Beat that. Market Street, Trmaore, Co. Waterford Telephone: 051-381010

Connolly’s Seahorse Tavern

Renowned in Tramore as a great place to eat, full to the brim at lunchtime serving the finest of food at reasonable prices, and continuing to serve food until about nine in the evening. Live music in the summer season also.

The Pine Room’s

One of Tramore’s finest restaurants. It offers a relatively standard menu, but more than makes up for this with excellent produce consistently cooked just right. Telephone: 051-381683

Sitting on top of the hill of Ballybricken, the Tap is a great pub for a few afternoon sociable’s, keeping an eye on the Gee Gee’s, and then relaxing into the evening after a tough day at the office. Always a few poeple about and a bit of craic to go with it.
