Focus Ireland is encouraging people in Waterford to sign up for its Camino challenge this autumn as the number of children and families in emergency accommodation in the south-east continues to rise.
There were 71 families with 127 children accessing emergency accommodation in the south-east region at the end of June which is an increase of 32% since the end of 2024.
Focus Ireland is aiming to have 20 walkers complete the Camino Portugues Coastal route. The trip will take place from 25 September to 2 October, 2025 starting in the town of Oia and walking to the historic city of Santiago.
The fully guided trek will bring the group along 120 km of the Portuguese Coastal Route and includes five walking days of varying distances and elevation.
Each participant is asked to raise €3,000 and all logistics including flights, accommodation, transfers, breakfast, dinner and guides are managed and organised by Focus Ireland.
Conor Culkin, Communications Officer with Focus Ireland said: “Focus Ireland’s work in Waterford has grown significantly, we now provide over 233 homes throughout the city and county through developments by Focus Housing Association, in close partnership with local authorities”.
“Our teams also deliver vital homeless and housing services every day, including Tenancy Support and Sustainment, Advice and Information, and both long-term and short-term supported accommodation. Despite these efforts, the need remains urgent. With 115 adults currently homeless in Waterford, the demand on services is considerable. These figures highlight the importance of continued collaboration to ensure that everyone has access to a safe and secure home.”
There are just a small number of places remaining for the Focus Ireland Camino challenge. Anyone interested in taking part in this year’s trip is asked to register by 22 August.
Lorraine Toner, Head of National Community Fundraising with Focus Ireland said: “It is an opportunity to meet new people, to push yourselves and more importantly to raise vital funds to end homelessness. We will do everything we can to make sure participants reach their target and there is complete flexibility with how you choose to fundraise”.
