Real life experiences

SOPHIA POWER

My time on work-placement at The Munster Express Newspaper has been valuable and very interesting.

Although I am a psychology student, I worked as a journalism intern for the last six months and learned so many new things.

I met and interviewed people from many walks of life and attended a variety of networking events around the city.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the internship was the hands-on nature of the work.

I interviewed several local organisations and individuals, charities, activists, and people in business within the Waterford area.

I really enjoyed interviewing and writing about local charities, community groups and individuals, to publicise their contributions to the Waterford community. This made me realise how entrepreneurial, charitable and generous the people of Waterford are and it was my pleasure to shine a light on them.

Whilst working at The Munster Express, I was pushed out of my comfort zone by participating in activities that were completely new to me, such as attending events independently, on my own.

Although they were very daunting at the beginning, the experience became easier over time and my confidence grew within these environments.

My communication skills were also developed as I connected with colleagues and clients via email, phone calls and in-person every single day.

My colleagues in the office were incredibly helpful and supportive, guiding me as I navigated journalism, which was a completely new field of work for me.

I developed and expanded my writing skills by writing clear, concise and informative articles under tight deadlines.

This will massively help me heading into my final college years whilst writing assignments.

I had to adapt my writing style and format to suit the genre of the piece.

I published several stories in the paper each week.

It was very rewarding receiving positive feedback and appreciation for the time I put into my articles.

Overall, it was a great experience to get an insight into the media world via The Munster Express.
