A man previously employed as a manager in a shop within City Square Shopping Centre is accused of allegedly taking over €3,000 from the business by making void till transactions, the District Court heard.

John Power (28) of 11 Closegate, Manor Street, Waterford city, appeared before Judge John Cheatle at Waterford District Court last month. 

He is accused of alleged theft, contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001, on a date between 1 October 2024 and 12 November 2025 at O’Brien’s Café. Sergeant John Phelan told the court that in October 2025, Gardaí received a report from the owner of several outlets in City Square, who stated that a man they previously employed as a manager at O’Brien’s had allegedly taken money from the business.

The man, identified as the accused, allegedly left the business with a loss of €3,500  by making void till transactions. Judge Cheatle decided to accept jurisdiction in the case, meaning it will stay in the District Court.

The Judge remanded the accused on continuing bail until 2 June, 2026, when the case will be mentioned again.
