December wasn’t designed with hurling in mind but De La Salle might reflect that fate dictated that last Sunday’s supposed Munster club showpiece would go ahead, despite people’s reservations.

The resultant Páirc Uí Chaoimh clash won’t go down in the annals as the greatest of games but given the arctic conditions the winners at least rose to the occasion.

The scoreline, nine points to eight, tells only some of the story. With 18 wides in an hour to rue, many of them, as the stock saying goes, “inexplicable”, Thurles Sarsfields were certainly wasteful in the extreme.
