Waterford Crystal 1; Ferrybank 2

Many pundits predicted that newly-promoted Ferrybank would struggle in their opening games back in the Premier League but someone along the way forgot to tell the players and their manager Paul Cashin. They now sit proudly at the top of the table following an opening day victory over the champions Tramore and now another against a Waterford Crystal side who have yet to get a point on the board following their two matches.

Brian Mallon, who scored all three goals against Tramore the previous week, struck again after 13 minutes when he finished off a fine pass from Kevin Roche. Crystal goalkeeper Derek Hearne did get a hand to the ball but it carried too much power.

Crystal equalised one minute before half-time. Joe Watson got in a deep cross which was pushed away by ‘keeper Herbert Mullaly into the path of Martin Tynan who finished well.

Kevin Roche scored Ferrybank’s winner on 74 minutes. Chris Hoban’s shot was deflected away by the Crystal defender Barry Costine and when the ball fell to Roche he headed past Derek Hearne.
