Provisional statistics outlined to Waterford City Council’s Joint Policing Committee (JPC) this week have illustrated the escalating levels of heroin in local circulation.
From the total seizures made by officers between November ‘09 and November, heroin accounted for 26 per cent of the overall figure, with cannabis leading the way on 55 per cent.
Cocaine seizures made up just three per cent of the total, with the remaining 16 per cent including a range of substances, including ecstasy.
That the Gardaí have ramped up their efforts to curb the city’s drug dealers this year is evident through its seizing of narcotics valued at €1,995,052 – a €1.85 million increase on 2009’s total seizure.
