On Sunday last in brilliant weather conditions over an excellent course in the grounds of St Augustine’s College, Abbeyside, the County Championship Cross Country season began and it was a most enjoyable fixture with lots of entries especially in the U10, 12 and 14 juvenile races and the novice events also had good fields. The novice men’s race was a closely fought one for most of the journey between two Ferrybank AC athletes Andrew Connick and Paddy Hogan, and Connick proved the stronger to take the title impressively in front of Hogan with Frank Quinlan, Waterford third and Jim Baldwin, Waterford took the Masters title. Equally impressive was Laura Behan KCK who took the novice women’s title in front of Cait Caulfield and Sylvia Malone, both Waterford AC, and Diane Behan Waterford AC won the Masters title. In the juvenile races there were clear cut wins for Kate Veale, West Waterford U18, Krista Meade, Ferrybank U12, Nicole Rowe, Waterford U16, Gary Cantwell, KCK U18, and one of the best races of the day saw Sinead Flynn, West Waterford outstay Aisling Quinn, Ferrybank to take the U14 title. It was particularly good to see practically all the club’s in the county get among the medals both as individuals and teams. A sincere thank you to Br Patrick and the rest of the Augustine’s Community for once again providing their excellent facilities to the Board and also to Br Patrick and the West Waterford club for laying out a very good course.
