Fine Gael councillor Tom Higgin’s resignation from the party and intention to contest the General Election as an Independent candidate will have little or no negative impact on the campaigns of his former party colleagues, the Mayor of Dungarvan has said.
Speaking to the Munster Express following his surprise announcement, Cllr Higgins dismissed the suggestion that his candidacy would threaten the campaigns of Fine Gael candidates John Deasy or Paudie Coffey. “Both of the Fine Gael nominees are experienced and established politicians and frontrunners to take a seat. And Paudie Coffey is and remains a close friend of mine”, he commented.
