Waterford could well be the location for a second IKEA furniture store in Ireland, which would represent a huge boost to the city’s economy if the roaring trade enjoyed by the existing outlet in Ballymun Shopping Centre is an indicator.
The exciting possibility has been spotted by one of the constituency’s candidates in the forthcoming general election, County and Town Councillor Joe Conway, who has identified ‘urgings’ in the bailout agreement between Ireland and the IMF/ECB that this country should seek to encourage retail developments of more than 6,000 sq metres. And he sees that as potentially a very positive spin-off from the four year recovery programme agreed as a pre-requisite to the loan money being made available.
