The Waterford minor footballers got their 2010 campaign off to the worst possible start when they were comprehensively beaten by Limerick in Kilmallock last Wednesday night. The Deise lads went into this game with high hopes of causing an upset but it wasn’t to be and Waterford were dispatched with consummate ease by the home side who now go into a Munster semi-final against Kerry.
Aidan Ahearne was dealt a blow before a single ball was kicked in Kilmallock when corner-back Ray O’Ceallaigh was forced to cry off through illness.
Waterford did not give themselves much of a chance when they failed to get out of the blocks and allowed Limerick to open up an early ten point lead. To their credit Waterford did match Limerick for the rest of the hours but they left themselves with too much to do and paid a heavy price for the bad start.
The omens didn’t look good for Waterford when Limerick’s lively corner-forward Danny Frewn scored the hosts opening goal in the fifth minute and things got even worse for Aidan Ahearne’s side when a few minutes later, wing-forward, Brian Noonan got in for Limerick’s second goal. At that stage, Limerick had 2-4 scored and Waterford had still to put a single score on the board.
To be fair to Waterford, they did outscore Limerick from that point on, but that may have been down to the Shannon-Siders believing that the hard work was done and taking their foot off the pedal.
