The courage of a young Glenmore girl who drowned while saving her sister, along with the efforts of the Lifeboat crew which attempted to rescue both girls, will be honoured on Saturday, September 11th.
On May 24th 2008, Nicole O’Brien lost her life off Inchydoney Strand in West Cork when attempting to rescue her sister CJ, whom she had noticed getting into difficulty in the water.
While CJ was safely brought ashore, Nicole couldn’t be resuscitated after being taken from the water, despite the valiant efforts made by her father Gerard, Gardaí and members of the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat crew.
On Saturday week, Nicole’s mother Isabelle will lead a fleet of motorcycles from the Rose of Mooncoin public house (via Carrick-on-Suir, Leamybrien, Dungarvan and Youghal) to Courtmacsherry.
“It’s something I’ve thought of doing for quite some time,” Isabelle told The Munster Express ahead of the bike run, which she hopes to make an annual event.
“Ever since that terrible day, given the efforts of the Lifeboat crew, who did everything they could to save both of my daughters, I’d always had it in my mind to give something back to them.”
As readers will no doubt be familiar with, each Lifeboat Station in the country is dependant on the brilliant efforts of local fundraising volunteers and the generosity of the general public.
