Two hundred residents at Waterford’s nursing homes have already cast their vote for Friday’s General Election.
Voting for citizens on the special voters’ register – which covers nursing home residents – took place in the constituency last Thursday and Friday. A special presiding officer and a Garda called to nursing homes across the city and country, so that all residents registered on the special voters list could exercise their constitutional right. The list is drawn up each year as part of the register of electors and voters can apply to be included by November 25th each year.
Gina Thomas at Havenwood Nursing Home said approximately one third of their residents had voted. “Residents would keep up-to-date on politics as part of our activities programme and we also had visits from a number of the candidates,” she continued. “The residents really enjoy staying informed and voting, it’s very important to them.”
