Five goals, a predictable but exciting-enough comeback, yet Sunday’s Confederations Cup final in Cape Town was unwatchable, as was the whole tournament, on account of those God-forsaken horns. Michel Platini would be doing soccer a service by banning them before next summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa. At least the competition gave us the quote of soccer’s off-season, from BBC commentator Steve Wilson during the finalists’ meeting earlier in the competition: “There’s an enormous gulf between the United States and Brazil, and I don’t just mean the Gulf of Mexico!”
