Many people were shocked last week to hear that that the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association may fold at the end of this year as it is in financial difficulty.
Chief executive, Padraig Brady, has informed members that there is a projected deficit of €100,000 for this year and things are getting worse by the day. If an urgent injection of funds was not forthcoming then the Association and its central office would have no option but to close, he said.
Although numbers have declined in recent years, the Association still claims a nationwide membership of 100,000 people and Mr Brady is appealing to as many of them as possible to rally to the cause with a financial contribution of €10.
