This week on Wednesday, 8th December at 6 pm a very illuminating exhibition on the history of Waterford city’s electricity supply will be launched at the city’s Central Library. The exhibition is entitled ‘When the Shannon came to Waterford’. This opening was deferred from its original date last week due to the inclement conditions. I am reliably told that the exhibition is very impressive so worth checking out. Later on in my article I discover that Waterford was ‘a leading light’.

Today we very much take electricity for granted without which modern life would be impossible, but less than 100 years ago it was an expensive luxury available to very few of our city’s people. This new, multi-media exhibition will trace the development of the city’s electricity supply from the earliest proposal for electric public lighting in the 1890s through Waterford Corporation’s proposed scheme in the 1920s to the present day.
