Last year when these two sides clashed at Fraher Field one of the games of the championship was fought out. But patrons attending the same venue on Sunday in the hope of a repeat performance were disappointed.
Both sides were short players from last year. For Ballyduff Upper Pa Kearney was out and his loss to the team was clear to see and how Ballyduff Upper will cope without him for the rest of the campaign remains to be seen. The city side were also short key personnel. Ian Flynn was missing from the full back line and in attack the dependable James Quirke, who’s free taking alone is valuable, was out as he sustained an injury in the lead-up to the game.
The 2008 champions began the game in flying fashion. All-star John Mullane opened the scoring with less than a minute on the clock and just moments later fellow inter county player and club mate Kevin Moran found himself in possession of the ball facing Adrian Power’s goal. The defender turned attacker unleashed a testing shot which beat Power but he was relieved when the ball struck the base of the post and was cleared to safety.
After ten minutes the city side led 0-3 to 0-2. John Mullane hit his second point and Thomas Kearney also got on the score sheet, with John Twomey and Brendan Hannon from a free registering scores for the westerners.
