Dungarvan CBS had eight points to spare over Blackwater Community School from Lismore in an all-Waterford Munster U15 Colleges hurling final for the White Cup played in idyllic conditions at Ardmore on Thursday last.
Following a very evenly contested first half, both sides retired at the break all square. The second period also proved to be a fairly evenly contested thirty minutes, the difference between the sides proving to be Dungarvan’s ability to hit goals at crucial times.
Playing against the breeze which blew in from the Atlantic Ocean, Blackwater CS had a dream start when Michael Kearney, a player we are sure to hear much more of in the coming years, had his side ahead inside the opening minute when he converted a free.
Dungarvan’a response was rapid as Michael Harney, another player with a very bright future, sent over a free from his own sixty-five metre line.
The Old Boro side stole a huge march on their West Waterford rivals on four minutes when Patrick Curran and Michael Harney linked up to set up Michael Shine to blast past Sean McGrath between the Blackwater posts for an early goal.
Things got even better for Dungarvan after this as first Cormac Curran and then Patrick Curran hit points to stretch their lead to five points and it was beginning to look as if a route was on the cards for Waterford’s youngest second level college.
However on eight minutes the Lismore College hit back with a bang. Referee John Ryan awarded Blackwater a free between the forty-five and sixty-five metre lines and less than ten metres from the sideline. Michael Kearney came out from his corner forward position to hit the free which looked to be sailing over the Dungarvan crossbar but at the last second dipped and dropped into the net.
