Those that entered Fraher Field early on Sunday last were served up a enthralling game between East and West Waterford’s under-16 hurlers for the Gleeson Cup, a competition sponsored each year by the well-known Ardmore family.
The west were to the better side in the opening half with Michael Kiely from the Naomh Brid club in particular to the fore with his crisp striking from frees giving them a ten points to five lead at the interval.
The east put in a much better second thirty minutes. An early Adam O’Sullivan goal gave them renewed confidence and further goals from Craig Burke and Liam Salmon had the sides all-square with time almost up.
However, some late Sean O’Donovan points and a Ryan Donnelly goal at the death gave the west a just-about-deserved win.
