Reigning champions Ballygunner are through to the semi-finals of the Senior Hurling championship after a six-point win over old rivals, Mount Sion in Walsh Park last Sunday.
However, the win wasn’t as comfortable as the scoreboard would suggest and the result of this game was still in doubt with only minutes remaining on the clock.
That Ballygunner finished with a late flourish is testament to the resolve of the champions who are not going to relinquish their title easily.
The game had somewhat of a delayed start with a mass brawl breaking out in the centre of the field shortly after the throw-in. In the hope that tempers would soon subside, Tommy O’Sullivan issued no yellow cards and allowed both sides to settle down and play some hurling.
Mount Sion took the lead with an early Ken McGrath free which was cancelled out by a point from Shane O’Sullivan who was picked out well by Harley Barnes.
The Gunners then took the lead when Stephen Power opened his account for the afternoon and shortly after that, the champions registered the game’s most crucial score.
A long ball into the forward-line was poked forward by Shane Walsh into the patch of JJ Hutchinson and the corner-forward found the back of the net with a tremendous shot.
