Dungarvan CBS set up an all-Waterford Munster ‘B’ senior colleges hurling final on Saturday week when they overcame the challenge of Glanmire Community School at Ballyduff Upper last weekend.
The Old Boro boys got off to a dream start when Colm Curran pointed a free with less than 30 seconds played. He quickly added two more frees to give his side a three-point lead.
Mark Collins registered the Cork lads’ first score of the game when he pointed a free with four minutes on the clock but that score was quickly cancelled out: first with a Colm Curran free on five minutes and then a Cathal Curran effort just moments later.
Dungarvan’s bright beginning got even better in the eighth minute when county minor star Luke Egan scored their only goal of the game. Donal Breathnach and Colm Curran followed up with pointed efforts from play to extend the CBS lead with just 10 minutes on the clock.
Colm Curran increased Dungarvan’s advantage with a hat-trick of points from frees between the 12th and 17th minutes. Cathal Fenton rounded off the first-half scoring with a point for Glanmire to send his side in trailing at the break by 1-10 to 0-2.
The Cork team needed a tonic start to the second half to have any chance of advancing to a Munster decider with St Pauls and they got just that courtesy of a Cathal O’Mahony goal a minute after the turnaround. Further efforts from Kevin Fenton and Mark Collins meant that by the seventh minute of the second half there was just six points between the sides.
Dungarvan CBS were dealt a cruel blow at that stage when Luke Egan was ordered off after he collected his second yellow card.
However, as has happened many times in the past, playing with a man less only made the Dungarvan side more resilient and shortly after Egan’s dismissal Colm Curran riffled over two frees.
Dara Brosnan pointed for Glanmire just short of the half’s midway mark; a score cancelled out by a Colm Curran free.
Mark Collins hit 1-1 for Glanmire inside a minute just after Curran’s score, the goal coming from a penalty.
John Sheehan struck a Glanmire point with four minutes to go giving his side some hope, but sandwiched in either side of it were two frees converted by Colm Curran, helping Dungarvan to a 1-15 to 2-7 victory.
