De La Salle got their senior championship campaign back on track with a comfortable win over Stradbally in Walsh Park last Friday evening. On an evening that was dark, damp and cold, the hurling befitted the conditions as this was a game that will not live long in the memory.
De La Salle started the game very well and opened up an early six point lead with John Mullane impressing from placed balls and wing-forward Eddie Barrett knocking over a couple of good points from play.
Stradbally who were missing quite a few regulars struggled to match the 2008 champions but a free from the returning Michael Walsh did open their account before they scored an absolute beauty of a goal. A long ball towards the De La Salle goal by Tony Grey was caught brilliantly by Chris Lawlor whose shot on the turn gave Stevie Brenner no chance.
De La Salle responded with further points from Mullane and Paudie Nevin while the half finished with two super points from Niall Curran. At half-time, the city side led on a scoreline of 0-10 to 1-3.
The half-time scoreline probably flattered Stradbally as De La Salle shot nine wides during the first half. Normal service soon resumed for De La Salle as Mullane scored another two frees before the all-star set up Paudie Nevin for a goal that sealed the deal.
