The players of De La Salle will remember their two games in Ozier Park last week for a very long time to come. On Monday they lost out to the Villa in the Under 14A League play-off, due mainly to an inspired display by the Villa goalkeeper. On Sunday morning last they returned to headquarters to face Carrick United in the U14A Cup Final, and they knew that they had a real battle on their hands because their opponents from Coolnamuck had defeated them twice during the course of the league campaign.
That fact, allied to the play-off loss meant that they had to show plenty of heart and spirit to avoid finishing the season empty-handed. Their manager Declan Long and the coaching staff really worked on the DLS players during the course of the week and their charges came up trumps in wonderful style. They turned in a magnificent performance and fully deserved their hour of glory.
Carrick made them work hard for the honour of being crowned cup winners and that resulted in the season coming to an end in brilliant fashion. Between cup finals and league play-offs, this was the 15th game since June which was played in Ozier Park and great credit must go to both teams for bringing the curtain down on in fine style in the superb re-vamped ‘old lady’ venue of Waterford soccer
