An inspired display by the Villa goalkeeper Andrew Kirwan was the main reason why the Villa won the Under-14A League title in Ozier Park last week. He produced a series of wonderful saves that broke De La Salle’s hearts.
That said, the Villa players did enjoy a fair deal of possession and took the chances that came their way. The opening goal from the penalty spot was scored by Austin Gleeson, a brother of the Republic of Ireland Under-17 star Jessica Gleeson, who was among those watching.
The game exploded into life in the very first minute when Conor Whittle ran from the halfway line before releasing Jamie Walsh who in turn found Ian Coady who stuck the ball into the Villa net, but an offside flag ruled out the goal.
Two minutes later the Villa took the lead. Tadgh Whelan played the ball forward to Gavin Purcell who cut into the penalty area where he was taken down by the De La Salle goalkeeper Tom Farrell. Gleeson kept his composure and he hammered the ball high into the roof of the net.
Andrew Kirwan produced the first of his many saves when he tipped away a shot from Ian Coady on 11 minutes. Coady had taken a super pass from Jamie Walsh.
One minute later the Villa scored once again, and this was only their second attack. Gavin Purcell received the ball out on the right and he got past Dylan Foley before crossing to the near post where Josh Aimiuh was waiting to head powerfully to the net.
