County Senior Hurling Champions and city rivals Ballygunner will have to do it all over again seven days later after the two sides ended in stalemate after extra time on Saturday evening last.
The biggest taking point was the dismissal of John Mullane on a straight red card just nine minutes in after a reckless challenge in front of the goal at the road end of the field. His sending off was met with stunned silence from the large crowd present, but it was the correct course of action by referee Pat Casey.
Ballygunner got off to a flying start when after just 11 seconds Andy Moloney pointed. Inside the same minute Ballygunner stretched their lead when Stephen Power pointed from play.
De La Salle, however, ensured that their city rivals were not going to walk away with the game as the early exchanges could have suggested, and in the third and fourth minutes, the ’08 county and Munster champions struck back with points from David Greene and a James Quirke free.
Colin Kehoe restored Ballygunner’s lead when he pointed from play and after Mullane was given his marching orders it seemed as if things were going to go the Gunners’ way.
Credit to De La Salle, however, and the 14 men really knuckled down to the task; none more so than Kevin Moran who had a stormer.
