Blues great Alfie Hale with Manchester United legend Pat Crerand at Monday evening’s Newstalk ‘Off The Ball Roadshow with Ulster Bank’ broadcast from Mason’s Sports Bar in Waterford.

A host of local/other sporting names took part in the show ahead of this Sunday’s All-Ireland hurling semi-final. The pair recalled some great anecdotes, including Alfie’s famous story about his Waterford team-mate, the late Al Casey during the 1968 European Cup tie second leg at Old Trafford. Clattered in a challenge by United’s Irish full-back Tony Dunne, the skilful Al took his time getting up, whether licking his wounds or milking the crowd’s appreciation or a bit of both. Eventually Dunne told him, ‘Get up, you’re ok.’ ‘It’s alright for you,’ replied Al. ‘I’m on the 4 to 12 shift in the Paper Mills tomorrow while you’ll be off playing golf!” | Photo: Gerry O’Carroll
