It was fitting that John Kiely was there to share in the lads’ achievement, having long urged them (like his late friend Greg Fives before him) to keep the faith when most people were showing little or none.

Whether by incident or design, Garry Hurney’s return to what’s always been his forte has proved an inspired move. How often has it been said that if Waterford had the pick of the county they’d be a match for most? But with the hand they’ve been given they’ve shown themselves to be men on a mission, not mere whipping boys.
