Waterford United proved to be to strong for Derry City at the RSC on Friday night last and as a result the gap between the two sides has now be narrowed to six.
Nothing less than a win was required from a Waterford point of view as regards the league title, and there is no doubt whatsoever now that the First Division title is back within the Blues’ sights.
This was the second time this season that the Candystripes failed to take anything from the Kilbarry venue. With second-placed Monaghan and fourth-placed Limerick also recording victories this triumph was absolutely vital for Stephen Henderson’s side. Star of the show was Willie John Kiely, the flying postman from Abbeyside. He stamped his class on the game with two wonderful goals to bring his total in the league to ten and he posted Waterford’s intent to register promotion this season.
The manager made two changes from the team which had defeated Cork City in their previous outing. Michael Coady and Seamus Long returned and the unlucky players to lose out were John Hayes and Daryl Kavanagh.
The victory was Waterford’s third on the spin and also it made it three games without conceding a goal. Next up for the Blues are two trips to Galway to play Salthill Devon and Mervue United and on current form they would have to be fancied to take six points from the two games.
