After losing to Ferrybank and then dropping two home points against Hibernians, the Villa returned to top form against Johnville in St Martin’s Park last week.
The St John’s Park outfit went into this contest in a confident frame of mind following their excellent away draw in Tramore four days earlier but the policy that they used in Graun Park backfired on them in this game. They played with a lone striker for almost an hour, and as a result their midfielders and defenders were put under severe pressure by the visiting players who stormed forward at every possible opportunity.
Having said that, Johnville could have taken the lead during the opening 15 minutes, but when the Villa did score they looked comfortable for long periods and the three points earned from this game keeps them in the top half of the league table.
Johnville started the game with a 4-5-1 formation and they moved the ball quickly as possible up to the lone striker James Fatumuso. He had a chance after 5 minutes when he got past full-back Simon Keane before cutting in from the left but he shot straight at the visiting goalkeeper Liam Kavanagh.
One minute later central defender John O’Leary played a long ball forward from just inside his own half. Fatumuso controlled it but on this occasion he shot high over the crossbar from just outside the penalty area.
The Johnville defender John Kennedy was the next player to get the ball up to Fatumuso and this time the Johnville No 9 had his effort saved by Liam Kavanagh.
The Villa settled after that effort and when Danny Walsh ran at the Johnville defence as it stood off a goal looked on but Walsh’s shot on the run went narrowly over Thomas Wall’s upright.
