In the coming years an ‘attraction of ‘scale’ will be developed in Waterford that has the ability to attract 200,000 people a year.
With the project set to be the subject of an upcoming feasibility report, Cllr. Adam Wyse requested an update at the Plenary Council meeting for September.
In reply to a request for an update from Cllr. Adam Wyse, Waterford Council’s Chief Executive Sean McKeown, said, “As we know that’s a key objective in the development that was adopted last year. It is a key project for both ourselves and Failte. The feasibility, in terms of a strategic assessment report, will explore where it should be located, what should it consist of etc.
“We had a meeting with Failte recently who confirmed they have finalised a strategic assessment report. They want to present that report to their department and their board with a recommendation to proceed to the preliminary business case. The next step is likely to be a call for expressions of interest” he explained, “around outlines of what we think the attraction of scale could be.
“The key threshold here is that this has to be something with the capacity to attract 200,000 people a year. That would be transformational,” he added. Not just to Waterford but to the region if we could have something of that scale.”
“So obviously quite significant funding involved but the strategic assessment report, next stage preliminary business case, that will determine exactly what it will be and exactly what it will cost.”
